Shotcut 25.05 Open-Source Video Editor Released with Alpha Strobe Video Filter

Shotcut 25.05

Shotcut 25.05 has been released today as the latest stable version of this open-source, cross-platform, and free video editing software for Linux, macOS, and Windows systems written in Qt and MLT.

Shotcut 25.05 is here almost two and a half months after the Shotcut 25.03 release to introduce a new Alpha Strobe video filter, adjustable track headers width to the timeline, an item count to the playlist, a new 'Add Generator' option to the Timeline toolbar, and a new File > Rereun Filter Analysis function.

This release also adds a new 'Freeze Frame' option to the timeline, a File > New submenu with item for Project and generators, a Settings > Preview Scaling > 1080p option, a Settings > Player > External Monitor > DeckLink Gamma function with SDR and HLG HDR options, and HLG color transfer/gamma to GPU Effects.

On top of that, Shotcut 25.05 changes the Convert to Edit-friendly dialog to make it obvious that both the "better" and "best" options create very large files, improves compositing in Obscure With Blur, Obscure With Mosaic, and Mask: Apply filters, and moves the Files > Go Up button to top left to be more like OS file browsers.

Several bugs were addressed in this release to improve existing functionality, such as Text: Rich scroll presets, the ability to select or drag short Timeline clips, the Files dock, selecting a track head, Filters > Copy Current/All, Speed time filters, Timeline > Record Audio, and applying Fade Out Audio in a filter set.

It also fixes SDI/HDMI capture/monitor with recent Blackmagic Design drivers, adding media with unknown or very long duration, prompting users for the duration, Center/LFE channels swapped in 5.1 sound output in DeckLink SDI/HDMI external monitor, and generating proxies for videos with BT.2020 color space.

Under the hood, Shotcut 25.05 ships with upgraded dependencies including Qt 6.8.3, MLT 7.32.0, Rubberband 4.0, and SVT-AV1 3.0. Check out the release notes for more details about the changes included in this new Shotcut update, which is available for download as a universal AppImage bundle for all Linux distros.
