How to Change the Aspect Ratio in Midjourney

Midjourney” is an AI software that creates images according to the text commands, known as prompts, given by a user. The method of action of Midjourney is similar to other AI-based image generators such as “Stable Diffusion” and “DALL-E”. Users can converse with the Midjourney bot on Discord. The first command to initiate image creation is “/imagine”. The command is followed by the text prompt for the image.

What is Meant by Aspect Ratio/Dimensions of an Image?

The “Aspect Ratio” of an image is its dimensions. An aspect ratio is the width-to-height ratio of an image. It is typically expressed as two numbers separated by a colon, such as 7:4 or 4:3. The main division of aspect ratio is between “landscape” and “portrait” where the landscape has wider images and portrait has taller images. Here are some popular Aspect Ratios and their uses:

    • The most common landscape ratio for Monitors and TV Screens is “16×9” whereas films are often shown in “18×9” or sometimes “21×9” aspect ratio.
    • In Portrait images, the “4×5” is the tallest possible aspect ratio for Instagram.
    • 1×1” is the aspect ratio for Profile Photos in most social media platforms such as WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.
    • Nowadays, there is a rising trend of tall “9×16” videos on Instagram Reels, Tiktok, and Snapchat.

How to Change the Aspect Ratio/Dimensions in Midjourney?

Note that the default aspect ratio of all images produced by Midjourney AI is “1×1”. Every change required in Midjourney is communicated to the bot by commands.

The “–aspect” or “–ar” parameter changes the aspect ratio of the generated image followed by the user’s required dimensions. For instance:

prompt string --ar <value>:<value>

Or:

prompt string --aspect <value>:<value>

Example

A Midjourney prompt for an Instagram post would read:

portrait of a young lady in a garden, --ar 4:5

Conclusion

We just learned how to change the aspect ratio of the image to be generated by Midjourney AI. Changing the aspect ratio of an image helps the users to have content that fits their exact needs. Earlier we saw that different platforms display images in changing aspect ratios and it is imperative for the user to generate images in the required width and height.
