Frenetic FOSS FPS ‘Xonotic’ Adds New Maps, Superbots & Game-Modes

If you’re stuck for something to do this weekend be sure to check out the latest release of Xonotic, a popular open-source FPS game.

First and foremost, Xonotic 0.8.6 addresses a major security flaw identified in previous versions of the game. Though the dev team behind the title stress there’s no known ‘exploitable’ code in the wild they still advise upgrading to a newer build.

But there are plenty of other reasons to upgrade, too.

Xonotic is pitched as a “free and fast arena shooter” drawing inspiration from classic first-person shooters like Quake and Unreal Tournament. It also welcomes community contributions in the form of player-made maps, mods, and other content.

A cross-platform multiplayer game, Xonotic has won itself an army of ardent fans who love its frenetic, fast-paced, and skill-based gameplay — gameplay that’s markedly improved in the latest release.

Xonotic 0.8.6 features:

  • New maps: Trident and Go
  • Existing maps updated
  • Weapons, monsters & item tweaks
  • Performance optimizations
  • New AI ‘superbots’
  • Improved visuals
  • Improved StrafeHUD
  • New scoreboard UI
  • Font hinting tweaks for better legibility

Additionally, Xonotic 0.8.6 comes with new game modes.

These include Mayhem and Team Mayhem “death-matches […] where players respawn with all weapons and full health/armor”; Survival where “randomly selected hunters must frag all of the survivors without being identified”, and Team Keepaway varaitn of the free for all.

In all, some excellent updates to this exemplar FOSS FPS — more details on the Xonotic blog, which is where you’ll also find download links for all supported platforms.

Thanks Yannick
